An International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an eight-digit serial number that is used to identify a serial publication, such as a magazine, in order to prevent duplication of information. The ISSN is particularly useful in differentiating between serials with the same title that are published simultaneously. The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is used in the ordering, cataloging, interlibrary lending, and other processes associated with serial publications.
Crossref is an approved Digital Object Identifier (DOI) Registration Agency of the International DOI Foundation and a member of the International DOI Foundation. It is managed by the Publishers International Linking Association Inc., and it was established in early 2000 as a cooperative effort among publishers to facilitate continuous cross-publisher citation linking in online academic journals.

The ZDB contains records of nearly all of Germany's scientific libraries as well as a large number of other public libraries, and it is publicly accessible over the Internet.

More than 1.5 billion citations connect millions of research articles, as well as funding sources, data sets, clinical trials and intellectual property (patents), and policy documents, all of which are covered by Dimensions.
MDPI, an open-access publisher maintains the Scilit database. Scilit is a free database for scientists that collects and indexes scientific literature. Daily database crawlers extract data from CrossRef and PubMed and quickly post it to Scilit.
